Duncan Hunter files for primary ballot

Wed Oct 31, 12:50 PM ET
CONCORD, N.H. - Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter has filed his paperwork to get on the New Hampshire primary ballot.

New Hampshire Secretary of State's office said officials received Hunter's petition and $1,000 check on Wednesday. He joins the growing list of Republicans trying to earn their party's nomination.

Duncan, who first was elected to the House from California in 1980, has made the U.S.-Mexican border a key issue in his struggling campaign. He has encouraged officials to increase immigration enforcement efforts, including extending the fence along the border with Mexico. He also sought to increase prosecution of smugglers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States.

Edwards calls global warming moral test

NEW ORLEANS - Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on Saturday called reversing global warming a "great moral test" and said the next president needs to stand up to industries resisting change.

"This is the great moral test of our generation. Are we actually going to leave this planet and America better for our children than we found it?" Edwards said at an environmental rally in New Orleans.

"Why have we not addressed the issue of climate change and global warming?" Edwards said. "I'll tell you why, no question about it: oil companies, gas companies, power companies and the lobbyists in Washington, D.C. We have to have a president who will stand up to these people."

Last month Edwards picked up an endorsement from the national environmental group Friends of the Earth Action.

Giuliani, Romney wrestle for 'fiscal conservative' mantle

By Erin Kelly, Gannett News Service

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential hopefuls Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney are tussling for the title of "strongest fiscal conservative" as they seek to portray themselves as tax-cutting, bureaucracy-slaying champions of small government.

The candidate who wins the moniker could get a big boost from voters in the GOP primary battle, political observers say.

"It's a unifying issue among Republicans," said Jack Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College in Southern California. "Republicans disagree on social issues, but you'll get a lot less of a family feud when it comes to basic economic principles. The social conservatives like it, the libertarians like it, and your old-fashioned Main Street Republicans like it. It's one of the safest things you can do."

Tom Tancredo Won't Run For Congress Again

(AP) DENVER Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo announced Monday he won't seek a sixth term in Congress from Colorado next year, saying he has succeeded in making illegal immigration a national issue.

But Tancredo said he will continue his long-shot bid for the White House and hinted that if that fails, he would consider running for the Senate.

The lawmaker said he doesn't need to stay in the House to push illegal immigration because "the issue now has a life of its own and it doesn't need one particular person to champion it."

Fred Thompson seized every opportunity

By NANCY BENAC, Associated Press Writer Sun Nov 4, 3:02 AM ET

WASHINGTON - It is the kind of story you could write a book about: A 35-year-old single mother of three is fired from her state job after refusing to go along with a scheme to pardon criminals who bribe aides to the governor. The plot cries out for a good lawyer to save the day.

All the better if he has charm and a commanding presence. Enter Fred Thompson, 6-foot-5 inches of cigar-chomping Southern gentleman. He saves the day; the woman is vindicated.
And best of all, for a man with a presidential campaign in his future, it is a true story, and someone did write a book about it.

Many a life follows a serendipitous path. One person's influence sends someone's career in a new direction.

Joe Biden discusses Iraq with elementary school class

Joe Biden, Democratic presidential candidate, discussed Iraq and Afghanistan with elementary school children. He remarked that President George W. Bush was "confused" when he decided to invade Iraq.

The Delaware senator encountered the group in the lobby of the New Hampshire statehouse on his way to filing his candidacy with the secretary of state's office, and gave a detailed answer to a question adults don't often ask candidates: How did the war in Iraq start?

Biden compared the war in Iraq with the invasion of Afghanistan.

Richardson discusses troops in Iraq and aid to veterans

By JON ERICSON, Courier Staff Writer

WATERLOO --- In a campaign stop at Sullivan Brothers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623 in Waterloo, Bill Richardson pledged to end the war in Iraq while promising a litany of benefits for veterans.

Richardson, a Democrat candidate for president, told the crowd he would call for an immediate withdraw of troops in Iraq if he were elected.

"The first thing I would do as president is get all of our troops out of Iraq. That's all of the troops with no residual forces," Richardson said.

Richardson said Iraq isn't helpless and troops could be withdrawn all at once. He said the country has a 400,000-man strong security force, trillions in oil reserves and a government in place and they should be able to fend for themselves.

Kucinich: 'It was an unidentified flying object'

GRAHAM, Wash. -- A presidential candidate claims he once saw a UFO in our state.

The candidate is Dennis Kucinich and the claim is according to the new book Sage-ing While Age-ing by actress Shirley MacLaine.

Hillary Clinton shakes off shots, still leads poll

BY CELESTE KATZ

Hillary Clinton may have taken some body blows during last week's Democratic debate, but Democrats still peg her as their top White House pick, a new poll finds.

Both Barack Obama and John Edwards unloaded on Clinton during the Oct. 30 debate, intensely questioning both her character and her willingness to provide straight answers on issues like Gov. Spitzer's controversial plan to give illegal immigrants driver's licenses.

Obama Criticizes Clinton's Drive to Win

By Dan Balz
Washington Post
Staff Writer Sunday, November 4, 2007; A05
Sen. Barack Obama leveled a fresh round of criticism at Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton yesterday, accusing his rival for the Democratic nomination of following a campaign plan that prizes
calculation over candor and that is aimed more at winning the election than uniting the country.

Obama used a speech in Spartanburg, S.C., to sharpen his differences with the Democratic front-runner and to frame the choices before voters a year ahead of the 2008 election. Calling the senator from New York "a colleague and a friend," Obama nonetheless cast Clinton as representative of a style of politics that has been better for the politicians than the country.

Obama promises more open policy towards Cuba

MIAMI: US Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama on Saturday promised a more open policy towards Cuba at a packed campaign rally in Miami, the heart of the anti-Castro Cuban exile community.

"Just 90 miles from here there is a country where justice and freedom are out of reach," Obama told the cheering crowd packed into a city auditorium.

"That's why my policy toward Cuba will be guided by one word: Liberty." Obama heartily criticised US President George W Bush, who restricted travel to Cuba and money remittances to the island in 2004 with the goal of toppling the communist regime of President Fidel Castro.

At 70, McCain Takes On Talk of His Age

Senator John McCain was fielding questions at a town-hall-style meeting earlier this month in Ankeny, Iowa, when a woman raised her hand and asked him, “from one white head to another white head,” why he wanted to be president in such troubled times.

“You’re getting pretty old!” she said, after praising his long service to the country. “And it’s such a hard job!”

Romney unveils healthcare reform plan

But this time the GOP presidential hopeful leaves out an element conservatives might reject.

By Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer August 25, 2007

WASHINGTON -- GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Friday released his principles for national healthcare reform but left out the linchpin of the plan he enacted as governor of Massachusetts: a requirement that individuals get coverage.

That shift could help him win over conservative Republican primary voters, experts said. But if he succeeds in becoming the GOP nominee, he may have to zigzag back to his Massachusetts roots to appeal to independents and Democrats.

Rudy Giuliani vows to push for tax cuts

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire: A Democratic president would raise taxes and ravage the US economy, Republican presidential primary candidate Rudy Giuliani said yesterday.
The former New York City mayor said he would lower taxes, make permanent President George W Bush's tax cuts and eliminate inheritance taxes.

He criticised Democrats who want to repeal Bush's cuts.
"When it's working, let's change it. That's a brilliant philosophy. It sounds little bit like Iraq," Giuliani said at a town hall meeting.

The cornerstone of Giuliani's campaign has been tax cuts, greater freedom over spending and less government. He said Americans would face a $3 trillion tax increase over the next decade unless Bush's tax cuts are made permanent.

Florida Dems Could Lose Say in 2008 Race

Aug 25, 4:58 PM (ET)
By NEDRA PICKLER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Florida Democrats would forfeit their votes in selecting a presidential nominee unless they delay their state election by at least a week, the national party said in a stern action Saturday meant to discourage others from leapfrogging ahead to earlier dates.
The Florida party has 30 days to submit an alternative to its planned Jan. 29 primary or lose its 210 delegates to the nominating convention in Denver next summer.

The state party chairwoman, Karen Thurman, said she would confer with state officials about the ultimatum. "It's going to be a difficult discussion," she said, because Floridians are wary of having their votes taken away.

Edwards to announce poverty tour

Can JRE pull off a JFK, or an RFK? John Edwards plans to announce Monday that he’ll take a break from fund-raising and campaigning in early-voting states next week for a three-day, eight-state, 12-city “Road to One America” tour aimed at calling attention to poverty in the deep South, the Mississippi Delta, Appalachia and the Rust Belt. The campaign points out that none of the states he’ll visit has an early 2008 primary, and says Edwards won’t be doing rallies.

Instead, TV viewers will see Edwards in coal country, Edwards in a factory, Edwards on a farm, Edwards in a struggling neighborhood, Edwards in a school, Edwards in a health care clinic. “It’s an effort to show the rest of the country how 37 million Americans live their lives in poverty every single day,” an Edwards aide said. “It’s not only their workplaces -- it’s their homes and the places they get health care.”

Giuliani Links Terror, Border Security

By BECKY BOHRER

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -

The car bomb scare in London and the attack Saturday at the Glasgow airport underscore the need for secure borders for the United States, Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani said Saturday.

"This is the United Kingdom," he said. "After eight years of the Bush administration, we are going to be shocked by what we find," the New York senator and former first lady said. "Somebody said to me the other day if there was ever a time for a woman president it's now because we're going to have to do a lot of cleaning."

Clinton Slams GOP Rival's Cuba Remark

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - Taking a swipe at a potential GOP presidential rival, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday criticized Fred Thompson for suggesting illegal Cuban immigrants pose a terrorist threat.

"I was appalled when one of the people running for or about to run for the Republican nomination talked about Cuban refugees as potential terrorists," Clinton told Hispanic elected officials. "Apparently he doesn't have a lot of experience in Florida or anywhere else, and doesn't know a lot of Cuban-Americans."

McCain Warns Deportations Could Lead to Riots!

Just when the dust was beginning to settle following President Bush's latest assault on common sense, in which he accused conservatives of "spreading fear" by being honest about amnesty, Senator John McCain decided that fear mongering was not such a bad tactic after all.

In fact, McCain decided that fear mongering was essential in trying to sell his amnesty snake oil to a skeptical and increasingly suspicious public. On June 2, McCain rolled out his fear-based defense of amnesty on the campaign trail in Le Mars, Iowa.

Responding to a question about deportation of illegal aliens, McCain delivered the following dilly:

"In case you hadn't noticed, the thousands of people who have been relegated to ghettos have risen up and burned cars in France,'' McCain said. ``They've got huge problems in France. They have tremendous problems. The police can't even go into certain areas in the suburbs of Paris. I don't want that in the suburbs of America.''

Hunter, an announced presidential candidate, immediately followed an impassioned plea from Rev. 10 Questions for Tom Tancredo

What evidence would convince you that global warming is a serious threat to the planet? —Jeff Young, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

I have no doubt that global warming exists. I just question the cause and what we can do to ameliorate it. But I wonder why the Sierra Club isn't going crazy about the environmental aspects of massive immigration into the U.S. The fact is, Americans consume more energy than anyone else, so if a person moves here from another country, they automatically become bigger polluters.

If you were given a choice between catching Osama bin Laden and deporting all illegal immigrants, which would you choose? —John M. Spalding, NEW YORK CITY

That kind of hypothetical choice would never happen, of course, but I guess I would take Osama immediately, and then my next step would be to deport all the illegal aliens.

Brownback Clarifies Stance on Evolution

Presidential hopeful Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) submitted an opinion column to the New York Times on Thursday explaining in detail his position on evolution.

In his Op-Ed piece, the Catholic conservative specified how science and faith must be looked at together when discussing intricate issues such as evolution. He added that evolution, for the most part, has much validity to it while at the same time lacks substance in many instances.

“The truths of science and faith are complementary,” explained Brownback. “[T]hey deal with very different questions, but they do not contradict each other because the spiritual order and the material order were created by the same God.”

Ron Paul: Perry's Bilderberg Attendance Proof Governor Part Of "International Conspiracy"

Texas Congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul has added his voice to those who believe Texas Governor Rick Perry should be investigated for a criminal violation of the Logan Act after he jetted off to meet with foreign elites yesterday at the Bilderberg Group conference in Istanbul.

Perry's trip to Turkey is a clear violation of the Logan Act which states that "Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both."

Tommy Thompson: Iraq War May Be Won or Lost This Week

May 29, 2007 -- Madison – Saying it was time for the Iraqi Parliament to democratize oil revenues, former Wisconsin Governor, Tommy Thompson, called on Iraq's elected officials to meet the May 31 deadline and to see that every family in Iraq receive direct payments from the country's oil profits.

“If Iraq fails to pass a revenue sharing law that directly benefits every family in Iraq, then democracy and capitalism in the country will face a bleak future,” said Thompson. “Winning the war in Iraq means establishing a functioning democracy among monarchies and dictators. But concentrating oil dollars among governments and oil companies, and leaving the people out, will only lead to the same old 'top down' system that has already failed.”

Dodd To Outline Next Steps In Fight To End War In Iraq

Senator and Presidential candidate Chris Dodd today will announce his plans to continue the fight to bring an end to the Bush Administration's failed policy in Iraq. Dodd will hold a live chat at the popular blog FireDogLake today at 5 p.m. ET where he will announce plans to introduce an amendment to the upcoming Defense Authorization bill that would bring an end to American involvement in Iraq's civil war.

"The current policy in Iraq has left us less secure and left our standing in the world in tatters. That is why we have to continue the fight to change course," said Dodd. "The Dodd Amendment will improve accountability, provide a timetable for the Iraqi government to get its house in order, and safely and responsibly redeploy our troops and bring them home. Now is the time to responsibly bring an end to our involvement in another country's civil war while rebuilding our Reserve and Guard units."

Presidential Candidate Sen. Obama Proposes Plan To Cover Uninsured, Improve Premium Affordability

Presidential candidate and Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Tuesday in Iowa City, Iowa, announced a proposal that would expand health insurance to almost all U.S. residents and reduce premium costs, the New York Times reports (Toner/Healy, New York Times, 5/30).

The proposal would require health insurance for children but not adults (McCormick/Dorning, Chicago Tribune, 5/30). Under the proposal, employers would have to offer health insurance or pay a percentage of their payrolls into a federal fund to provide coverage. The proposal would exempt the smallest employers from the requirement. The proposal would establish a public health plan for residents who cannot obtain health insurance through their employers or current public programs such as Medicaid and SCHIP (New York Times, 5/30). The proposal would expand Medicaid and SCHIP to cover more low-income residents (Young, The Hill, 5/30).

Hillary Clinton Defends Use of Corporate Jet for Family Vacations

On Wednesday, Hillary Clinton was challenged by the press about the Clinton family’s acceptance of more than $900,000 in free private travel from Infousa, a company linked to scamming the elderly.

Her reply? She said that she had complied with all Senate ethics rules and reimbursed the company for the amount of a first class air ticket — usually about 1 percent of the cost of the luxurious private jet travel. Barack Obama and the First Presidential Debate

The press accounts of the performance of Senator Barack Obama in the first Presidential Debate at South Carolina State University give him high marks for staying in there with politicians who have been Senators or Governors for much longer.

In fact, one poll gave him the winner's edge over Hilary Clinton and the entire field. Nevertheless, he proved that despite the fact that he had not fielded complete positions on critical issues to high voting blocks like health care, social security and the like, he was able to answer crucial questions in a substantive manner equal to his colleagues that did him no harm.

The primary criticisms of the media were leveled at the fact that he did not appear presidential enough in his response to a question about Iraq that asked, if two American cities were attacked by Al Queda how he would change the military stance abroad to account for it. He was criticized as not being aggressive enough to say that he would attack and destroy the enemy and that he did not use his openings to reassure Jewish voters about his commitment to their issues.

Straw polls bolster Hunter's confidence

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) hopes to emerge as the authentic conservative in the GOP presidential field by presenting himself as strong on national security and focusing on two issues his fellow candidates spend little time talking about: cracking down on China for devaluing its currency and building a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.

"What we're going to do is carry this message: strong national defense, enforceable borders and a two-way street on trade," Hunter said in an interview with The Politico.

Excerpts from Hunter interview

California Rep. Duncan Hunter was interviewed this week by Politico reporters as part of a series of sessions with the 10 candidates who are taking part in the first GOP presidential debate on Thursday. Some excerpts:

WHY HE'S RUNNING

I want to lead this nation and serve the American people and help to lead in a new era of security and economic growth. And I think that the next five to 10 years of our nation's history will be years where the focus will be on national security -- with Iran walking down the path to develop nuclear weapons, with North Korea already having some … and with the emergence of communist China as a new military superpower, stepping in the shoes of the Soviet Union.

Not Much Disagreement Among Dems in First Presidential Primary Debate

The eight Democrats who are seeking their party’s 2008 presidential nomination met Thursday night for the first in a series of debates leading up to the first primary and caucus voting next January. They did not exhibit much disagreement and often criticized the Bush administration’s handling of the Iraq war and also defended their strategies for combating terrorism.

But what was perhaps most notable about the debate, which was held at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, was that recent events provided plenty of grist for candidates to expound on topics that otherwise might not have been addressed.

Senator Has New Plan To Partition Iraq

Apr 26, 2007
(US News) Sen. Sam Brownback, a 2008 GOP presidential candidate, says that he hopes to move a bipartisan bill calling for the partitioning of Iraq into three states before the Democratic supplemental funding bill for the war goes to the president for his promised veto.

"I'd like to do it before we go to veto," he said in a roundtable interview with reporters. His plan: teaming with Sen. Joe Biden, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to push forward Biden's plan to move toward a political division of the war-torn nation. ‘Top Tier’ Candidate? Maybe Not, but Dodd Is Still Enjoying the Ride

ORANGEBURG, S.C., April 27 — Senator Christopher J. Dodd has a magnificent handshake, maybe the best in the Democratic presidential field. He grips with a brisk clench, makes masterly eye contact and tops it off with a light pat on the wrist from his nonshaking hand. It is the grip of a pro, a (perish the thought) political pro, which he is, the silvery-haired son of a senator, accomplished lawmaker, backslapper and armsqueezer.

It is a typical morning in the Dodd campaign in that he is coming off a bit of a downer, Thursday night’s Democratic debate here. He earned some solid reviews but failed to draw much notice. He is polling in Kucinich-land. And yet, Mr. Dodd of Connecticut remains the consummate happy warrior, intent on spinning stories, collecting belly laughs.

Hillary Clinton Defends Southern Accent on Campaign Trail

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday she sees her sometimes Southern accent as a virtue.
"I think America is ready for a multilingual president," Clinton said during a campaign stop at a charter school in Greenville, S.C.

The New York senator — who said she's been thinking about critics who've suggested that she tried to put on a fake Southern accent in Selma, Ala. — noted that she's split her life between Arkansas, Illinois and the East Coast.
Clinton added a Southern lilt to her voice last week when addressing a civil rights group in New York City headed by the Rev. Al Sharpton. On Monday, dealing with a microphone glitch at a fundraiser for young donors, she quoted former slave and underground railroad leader Harriet Tubman.

After debate, little-known Democrat draws a crowd

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Until the first Democratic presidential debate here on Thursday night, former senator Mike Gravel campaigned in almost total obscurity since becoming the first Democrat to declare more than a year ago, in April 2006.

But all that changed with a few provocative remarks from the stage of South Carolina State University with his seven better-known rivals looking on.

McCain Tries to Recapture Vigor of His Last Campaign

TEMPE, Ariz., April 28 — Several times this week — while wrapping up a town hall meeting in Des Moines, or a conference call with bloggers from Sioux City, Iowa — Senator John McCain and his listeners were told that there was time for just one more question. “Can I do two more?” Mr. McCain would ask.

As he toured crucial states this week after announcing his candidacy for president, Mr. McCain, a Republican of Arizona, made it clear that the policy he adopted as a candidate in 2000 of speaking freely, frequently and at length to reporters and audiences was still in place as he struggled to regain front-runner status.

Romney remark on cost of getting bin Laden stirs the bloggers

April 29, 2007

Mitt Romney generated a tempest in the blogosphere last week by suggesting in an interview that the United States shouldn't devote too many resources trying to capture Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. "It's not worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person," Romney told the Associated Press, adding that the United States should concentrate instead on fighting the broader problem of Islamic militancy.

Bloggers on both sides of the ideological spectrum, including some loyal to opposing candidates, seized on the former Massachusetts governor's remarks. "Perhaps Romney should watch the tape of the planes hitting the towers again," the writer Byron York wrote on National Review Online. A blogger on the left-leaning site Talking Points Memo wrote, "One wonders what the reaction would be if a Democrat said this."

Congressman Ron Paul Expresses Concern Over the Future of the U.S. Dollar

When Congressman Ron Paul announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States, we immediately expressed our support, as did many of our colleagues - Jay Taylor, Rick Rule, Doug Casey, Roger Weigand, Ben Johnson and a host of others. We began to discuss issues with the congressman and Jeff Deist, a senior member of his staff, each week on The Korelin Economics Report in order to make listeners aware of his views. We also posted a video of an interview with him which we did in San Francisco at the Gold Show on our website and on You Tube, which has been watched by thousands of people.

Why did we devote 20% of our program to the Congressman? Purely and simply because we believe that his views of the U.S. economy are spot on. For the past fifteen years we have presented all the economic views that we are aware of, both positive and negative. Each week we have guests who agree with the conventional financial press and those who disagree. We do this because we believe that people need to be aware of all sides of the issues so that they can effectively make up their own minds.

This Commentary has been posted because once again there is NO real news story about Ron Paul. Please read the rest of this commentary at: http://www.kitco.com/ind/korelin/apr262007.html

I feel obligated to point out two pertinent facts to all conservatives 1) The article is on the World Net Daily -- not exactly a well respected news organization 2) We have seen in the past that Laws do not apply to the Clintons.

Clinton walks tightrope as a trailblazing insider

NEW YORK -- Call it the Clinton contradiction.

Hillary Rodham Clinton is a political trailblazer, pursuing the precedent-setting achievement of becoming the first female candidate to win the presidency. How, then, did she also become the candidate of the Democratic Party establishment -- a title historically attached to less-than-scintillating contenders such as John Kerry, Al Gore and Walter Mondale?

In Iowa, Obama shedding the rock star dazzle

COLO , Iowa -- Senator Barack Obama is not big on what he calls red-meat applause lines when he campaigns in small communities like this one, 45 miles northeast of Des Moines. He does not tell many jokes. He talks in even, measured tones, and at times is so low-key that he lulls his audiences into long, if respectful, silences.

Obama likes to recount the chapters of his unusual life : growing up in Hawaii, living overseas, community organizing in Chicago, working in the Illinois Legislature, though not his years as a US senator.

McCain stakes bid on winning war

By Michael D. Shear, Washington Post April 8, 2007

WASHINGTON -- Senator John McCain will launch a high-profile effort this week to convince Americans that the Iraq war is winnable, embracing the unpopular conflict with renewed vigor as he attempts to reignite his stalling bid for the presidency.

With the Virginia Military Institute as a backdrop, the Republican from Arizona plans to contend in a speech on Wednesday that victory in Iraq is essential to American security and that President Bush's war machine is finally getting on track after four years, aides and advisers said.

Edwards: Let IRS do millions of returns

RALEIGH --Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards wants the Internal Revenue Service to calculate and complete the income tax returns of up to 50 million Americans annually.

In a podcast the campaign will post on its Web site today, Edwards says the U.S. tax code is unnecessarily complicated and full of loopholes that favor the wealthy over the working class.

Under his plan, the IRS would gather tax information for 50 million Americans with relatively simple returns. The IRS would calculate their tax bill or refund, and mail a final report to the taxpayer, who would be able to just sign and return the form. Edwards' campaign estimates it would save taxpayers about 225 million hours annually.

Tancredo: Conservative Message Will Help In Race

(AP) MANCHESTER, N.H. Presidential hopeful Tom Tancredo said Wednesday he isn't deterred by the fundraising race, polls that show him trailing or critics saying he's an also-ran.

The Colorado representative said he'll emerge from the crowded Republican field a winner because he has a conservative message that's lacking in the race.

"I have a built-in constituency of average Americans who are worried the impact of illegal immigration will have on their jobs, their schools, their hospitals, their prisons, their national security and their culture. There are millions of them."

Romney clarifies reports on hunting

BOSTON - Officials in the four states where Mitt Romney has lived say the Republican presidential contender, who calls himself a lifelong hunter, never took out a license. Romney says that is because he seldom has hunted where he needed one.

Questions about his hunting activities trailed Romney this past week after he remarked at a campaign stop that he has been a hunter nearly all his life. The next day, his campaign said Romney had gone hunting just twice — once as a teenager in Idaho and last year with GOP donors in Georgia.

BAGHDAD -- Sen. John McCain criticized reports out of Iraq he said focused unfairly on violence, saying Sunday that Americans were not getting a "full picture" of progress in the security crackdown in the capital.

McCain, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, was combative during a press conference in the military's media center in the heavily guarded Green Zone, and responded testily to a question about remarks he had made in the United States last week that it was safe to walk some Baghdad streets.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Trucking Safety Act specifically prohibits Mexican trucks from entering the United States beyond commercial zones along the U.S.-Mexico border without meeting specific safety and security conditions.

“There are considerable safety and security risks involved with providing Mexican truckers complete and unrestricted access to American roadways,” said Congressman Hunter. “It is important that these issues are thoroughly addressed before Mexican motor carriers are permitted to freely operate beyond established commercial zones along the Southern land border.

Ron Paul: The Tip of the Spear

Ron Paul is a civil constitutionalist. He supports the same ideals of peaceful, non-intervention in foreign policy and for the same reasons as did our founding fathers. (the substance of which can be reviewed in a previous article here)

But make no mistake, the founding fathers were “armed and dangerous” in response to tyranny….. and so is Ron Paul.

Is Fred Thompson about ready to lay down the Law and Order?

by CHUCK RAASCH
WASHINGTON - Fred Thompson's surprising third-place showing in the latest USA Today-Gallup Poll is certainly a reflection of rank-and-file Republicans' unease about the declared GOP candidates. But it also provides insight into the show-biz requirements of a successful modern candidate.

Thompson, who has oscillated between the political and entertainment culture for 35 years, personifies that cross-cultural appeal more than any Republican now in the field. Simply put, Americans like a little rock star in their presidential candidates. (See Barack Obama).

The question is whether a few polls and some Internet buzz is enough to entice a 64-year-old man with two children younger than 4 and a successful career on NBC's "Law and Order" series to jump into an 18-month meat grinder toward the presidency.
