CONCORD, N.H. - Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter has filed his paperwork to get on the New Hampshire primary ballot.
New Hampshire Secretary of State's office said officials received Hunter's petition and $1,000 check on Wednesday. He joins the growing list of Republicans trying to earn their party's nomination.
Duncan, who first was elected to the House from California in 1980, has made the U.S.-Mexican border a key issue in his struggling campaign. He has encouraged officials to increase immigration enforcement efforts, including extending the fence along the border with Mexico. He also sought to increase prosecution of smugglers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States.

Duncan Hunter says Bush immigration plan terrible
Washington, D.C. - Republican Duncan Hunter thinks President Bush's new plan to provide additional border security funds to the immigration bill is "terrible".
Speaking to CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Hunter said, "I think it's a terrible trade for the president of the United States or the Senate, which really has this amendment, to trade border security for amnesty."

Rep. Duncan Hunter: 'I Will Never Abandon Israel'
ALEXANDRIA, VA -- "I can pledge this to you: If I should be elected president of the United States, I will never, never, never abandon Israel," emphatically announced Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., before enthused attendees of "A Night to Honor Israel" at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall at Northern Virginia Community College, Sunday night.
Hunter, an announced presidential candidate, immediately followed an impassioned plea from Rev. Jan Willem Van Der Hoven, who in his "Greetings from Israel" address declared that an American pull-out in Iraq would be tantamount to an abandonment of Israel, a nation surrounded by enemies in the Middle East. "Let's not trade oil for Jews!" he exclaimed.

Straw polls bolster Hunter's confidence
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) hopes to emerge as the authentic conservative in the GOP presidential field by presenting himself as strong on national security and focusing on two issues his fellow candidates spend little time talking about: cracking down on China for devaluing its currency and building a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.
"What we're going to do is carry this message: strong national defense, enforceable borders and a two-way street on trade," Hunter said in an interview with The Politico.

Excerpts from Hunter interview
California Rep. Duncan Hunter was interviewed this week by Politico reporters as part of a series of sessions with the 10 candidates who are taking part in the first GOP presidential debate on Thursday. Some excerpts:
WHY HE'S RUNNING
I want to lead this nation and serve the American people and help to lead in a new era of security and economic growth. And I think that the next five to 10 years of our nation's history will be years where the focus will be on national security -- with Iran walking down the path to develop nuclear weapons, with North Korea already having some … and with the emergence of communist China as a new military superpower, stepping in the shoes of the Soviet Union.

Hunter calls on Reid to resign
By Mike Soraghan
April 26, 2007
House Armed Services chairman and presidential candidate Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) called on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to resign his leadership position because of Reid’s comment that the Iraq war “is lost.”
“It is a statement that can be viewed by our adversaries as encouragement,” Hunter said yesterday. “It must be a surprise to al Qaeda leaders to be sitting in their safe house and have an aide come in and say, ‘Sen. Reid says the war is lost.”

HUNTER INTRODUCES NAFTA TRUCKING SAFETY ACT
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) introduced legislation clarifying and strengthening current limitations imposed on Mexican motor carriers entering the United States. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Trucking Safety Act specifically prohibits Mexican trucks from entering the United States beyond commercial zones along the U.S.-Mexico border without meeting specific safety and security conditions.
“There are considerable safety and security risks involved with providing Mexican truckers complete and unrestricted access to American roadways,” said Congressman Hunter. “It is important that these issues are thoroughly addressed before Mexican motor carriers are permitted to freely operate beyond established commercial zones along the Southern land border.

Republican presidential hopeful Hunter not to seek re-election to House of Representatives
WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican long-shot presidential candidate Duncan Hunter does not plan to seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives, but his son probably will run for the seat, Hunter's presidential campaign spokesman said Wednesday.
Hunter's son is Duncan D. Hunter, who as a U.S. Marine served two tours of duty in Iraq. He has not yet made a formal announcement, but that could come soon, said spokesman Roy Tyler. Meanwhile, the son is helping his father in appearances during his presidential campaign, Tyler said.
"He makes a pretty good stand-in" for his father, Tyler said.

Hunter slams Dem Iraq funding plan
WASHINGTON,
March 9 (UPI) --
A prominent Republican has slammed the Democrats' plan to condition Iraq war funding on troop readiness.
Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., the ranking Republican on the Armed Services Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, was critical of the new funding proposal for the conflict in Iraq that was unveiled Thursday by congressional Democrats.
"We should reject any Democratic proposal that puts U.S. forces in a straitjacket, which is a recipe for disaster. Our founding fathers wisely established a single commander-in-chief to oversee the military and its movements on the battlefield. They never intended members of Congress to micro-manage military operations," Hunter said.

Duncan Hunter Drops Two Top Advisors

San Diego Congressman Duncan Hunter has fired two top advisers from his presidential campaign, because of their controversial statements.
Hunter dropped Lois Eargle for reportedly telling an illegal immigrant to, "get back to Mexico.
"The other advisor, Henry Jordan, says he made a disparaging comment about Muslims and Buddhists back in 1997 and didn't want to damage Hunter's campaign.

Duncan Hunter: Iraq Debate a 'Disservice' to Troops
Rep. Duncan Hunter said Congress has wasted time debating an increase in U.S. troops in Baghdad because the 82nd Airborne is already executing the plan.
Hunter, a California Republican, said the debate about the escalation is misguided and insults the troops in the field.
"The idea that Congress pulls the rug out from under the soldiers as they're actually carrying the mission out, by condemning this mission . . . I thought it was a disservice to our soldiers. There is a right way to leave Iraq and that is to continue to rotate Iraqi battalions that we've trained and equipped into the fight."

Duncan Hunter: Upwardly mobile political career
WASHINGTON - When Bob Hunter, a Riverside, Calif., businessman, would hear of a conservative's campaign that needed volunteers, he would pile his family into the station wagon and drive off to ring doorbells. Hunter's son Duncan grew up believing in retail politics.
When Hunter returned home after serving as an alternate Goldwater delegate at the 1964 Republican convention in San Francisco, he told Duncan about chatting with another alternate, an amiable fellow, some actor, named Reagan. Two years later he was elected governor. Duncan learned early on about rapid upward mobility in politics.

By SAM HANANEL, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON — Two of the Republicans' most conservative presidential hopefuls promised anti-abortion activists on Monday that if elected, they would work to overturn the Supreme Court decision legalizing the procedure.

"We recognize a tragedy of life in Roe v. Wade, but that tragedy will not always stand," Brownback told thousands of cheering abortion foes at an afternoon rally.
