Edwards calls global warming moral test

NEW ORLEANS - Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on Saturday called reversing global warming a "great moral test" and said the next president needs to stand up to industries resisting change.

"This is the great moral test of our generation. Are we actually going to leave this planet and America better for our children than we found it?" Edwards said at an environmental rally in New Orleans.

"Why have we not addressed the issue of climate change and global warming?" Edwards said. "I'll tell you why, no question about it: oil companies, gas companies, power companies and the lobbyists in Washington, D.C. We have to have a president who will stand up to these people."

Last month Edwards picked up an endorsement from the national environmental group Friends of the Earth Action.

(CBS/AP) Congress should continue to push for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq regardless of what top military advisers say in their progress report next month, Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards said Sunday on Face The Nation.

"I think they should not submit a single funding bill to the president for the war that doesn't have a timetable for withdrawal," Edwards told Bob Schieffer. "And I think they should use whatever legislative tool is available to them, including filibuster."

Edwards to announce poverty tour

Can JRE pull off a JFK, or an RFK? John Edwards plans to announce Monday that he’ll take a break from fund-raising and campaigning in early-voting states next week for a three-day, eight-state, 12-city “Road to One America” tour aimed at calling attention to poverty in the deep South, the Mississippi Delta, Appalachia and the Rust Belt. The campaign points out that none of the states he’ll visit has an early 2008 primary, and says Edwards won’t be doing rallies.

Instead, TV viewers will see Edwards in coal country, Edwards in a factory, Edwards on a farm, Edwards in a struggling neighborhood, Edwards in a school, Edwards in a health care clinic. “It’s an effort to show the rest of the country how 37 million Americans live their lives in poverty every single day,” an Edwards aide said. “It’s not only their workplaces -- it’s their homes and the places they get health care.”

Note from the Owner: I wonder how many $400 haircuts he has scheduled during this "Road to One America" Poverty tour. I can't help but ask if this tour is Carbon Neutral?

Edwards says nonprofit wasn't exploited to pay for NH travel

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Presidential hopeful John Edwards says his nonprofit center's activities were completely legal and he didn't exploit it to fund early trips to New Hampshire.

The nonprofit Center for Promise and Opportunity paid for Edwards' 2005 "Opportunity Rocks" tour of college campuses nationwide, including New Hampshire and several delegate-rich states.

Edwards: Democrats 'stand firm' on Iraq

WASHINGTON, May 6 (UPI) -- Former senator and Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said Democrats should not negotiate with President George W. Bush on an Iraq funding bill.

The North Carolina Democrat and 2004 vice presidential candidate said Democrats should not back down and, in a television commercial that began airing last week, urged Congress to keep sending the same bill to the White House

John Edwards pushes focus on poverty in book

SAN DIEGO -- With the Iraq war dominating this weekend's California Democratic convention, presidential candidate John Edwards turned to a collection of essays to try to spark interest in his signature domestic theme: poverty.

In the just-released book, "Ending Poverty in America: How to Restore the American Dream," Edwards and other essayists argue that efforts to improve the lives of the nation's poor are hampered by failing schools, lack of affordable health care and low-wage service-economy jobs with few chances of career advancement.

Edwards: Let IRS do millions of returns

RALEIGH --Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards wants the Internal Revenue Service to calculate and complete the income tax returns of up to 50 million Americans annually.

In a podcast the campaign will post on its Web site today, Edwards says the U.S. tax code is unnecessarily complicated and full of loopholes that favor the wealthy over the working class.

Under his plan, the IRS would gather tax information for 50 million Americans with relatively simple returns. The IRS would calculate their tax bill or refund, and mail a final report to the taxpayer, who would be able to just sign and return the form. Edwards' campaign estimates it would save taxpayers about 225 million hours annually.

(CBS4) AVENTURA John Edwards made a campaign stop in South Florida on Saturday to continue his fundraising drive as he prepares for a presidential run in 2007.

The former Democratic senator from North Carolina met with supporters in Aventura, as he continued a whirlwind week which saw him make campaign stops in Indianapolis, Lexington, Ky., Youngstown, Ohio, before arriving in Miami, where he hopes to raise as much as possible before the first-quarter campaign finance reports are due.

It’s going very well so far,” Edwards told CBS-4 on Saturday. “We’ve got a lot of momentum. We’re doing very well in our fundraising and our political work around the country and we feel very encouraged.”

Edwards, Wife Defend Campaign Decision

WASHINGTON (March 26) - Elizabeth Edwards said a "hot spot" has been detected in her right hip in addition to the cancer found in one of her ribs, but said doctors told her they believe it is too small to pose a new health risk.

Edwards, who appeared with her husband John Edwards on CBS' "60 Minutes" Sunday, was asked in the interview whether there were any new test results indicating her recurrent breast cancer had spread beyond the rib.

Edwards Declares War On Fox News

Mar. 8 - Democratic presidential contender John Edwards responded to the charge of liberal bloggers and announced this week that he will boycott an August debate co-hosted by Fox News.

Seeking to solidify the liberal base of his party, Democratic presidential contender former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., announced this week his boycott of the August 14th Democratic debate in Nevada being co-hosted by Fox News.

Edwards was, in fact, responding to a gauntlet thrown by blogger Markos Moulitsas, founder of liberal website the Daily Kos, who asked the Democratic candidate pool "not to do a Fox News debate," rather "to debate in Nevada with another media partner."

John Edwards Hopes to Raise 'Coulter Cash' After Commentator's 'Faggot' Comment

Fox News
Sunday, March 04, 2007

John Edwards' campaign, reacting to derogatory comments by conservative commentator Ann Coulter — she called the former North Carolina senator and presidential hopeful a "faggot" — is trying to turn it into a rallying point for fundraising, asking supporters to donate $100,000 in "Coulter Cash."

It was unclear from the statement on the Edwards campaign Web site what the money would exactly go to, but it did address the comments directly.

Edwards makes plain his stance on Iraq

NASHUA, N.H. -- Health care was the topic of the day Saturday, but Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards made sure New Hampshire voters gave him another chance to say he was wrong as a senator to authorize the use of force in Iraq.

Edwards' visit to New Hampshire was billed as a series of house meetings to promote his health care plan and his presidential bid. But less than five minutes after walking into the day's first house party, the 2004 vice presidential nominee turned to the subject that has consumed the Democratic contenders: Iraq.

Clinton Promises to End War if Elected

Clinton Promises to End War if Elected
Feb 2, 4:29 PM (ET)
By NEDRA PICKLER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday she would not have attacked Iraq if she were president in 2002 and would end the war if elected, as she tried to blunt rivals like John Edwards who are stoking anti-war passions in the Democratic Party.

Clinton, raising her voice at one point to be heard above anti-war hecklers, suggested that calls from Edwards and others to cut off funding for President Bush's troop increase are unlikely to win approval in a narrowly divided Senate.

Biden Unbound

Biden Unbound:
Lays Into Clinton, Obama, Edwards Loquacious Senator, Democratic Candidate on Hillary: ‘Four of 10 Is the Max You Can Get?’ Edwards ‘Doesn’t Know What He’s Talking About’
By Jason Horowitz
Senator Joseph Biden doesn’t think highly of the Iraq policies of some of the other Democrats who are running for President.

To hear him tell it, Hillary Clinton’s position is calibrated, confusing and “a very bad idea.” John Edwards doesn’t know what he’s talking about and is pushing a recipe for Armageddon in the Middle East. Barack Obama is offering charming but insubstantial fluff. And all of them are playing politics.

Clinton's camp fires first salvo

Clinton's camp fires first salvo
BY GLENN THRUSHWASHINGTON BUREAU
January 21, 2007, 11:34 PM EST

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's pollster fired an opening salvo at Sen. Barack Obama and John Edwards yesterday, claiming their campaigns are "stalled or falling" -- and suggesting Obama isn't tough enough to withstand GOP attacks in 2008.

A day after Clinton announced she would run for president -- and win -- her campaign's chief strategist Mark Penn sent a memo to reporters intended to offset an avalanche of articles emphasizing Clinton's high disapproval ratings and questioning her electability.
