Giuliani, Romney wrestle for 'fiscal conservative' mantle

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential hopefuls Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney are tussling for the title of "strongest fiscal conservative" as they seek to portray themselves as tax-cutting, bureaucracy-slaying champions of small government.

The candidate who wins the moniker could get a big boost from voters in the GOP primary battle, political observers say.

"It's a unifying issue among Republicans," said Jack Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College in Southern California. "Republicans disagree on social issues, but you'll get a lot less of a family feud when it comes to basic economic principles. The social conservatives like it, the libertarians like it, and your old-fashioned Main Street Republicans like it. It's one of the safest things you can do."

Romney unveils healthcare reform plan

WASHINGTON -- GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Friday released his principles for national healthcare reform but left out the linchpin of the plan he enacted as governor of Massachusetts: a requirement that individuals get coverage.

That shift could help him win over conservative Republican primary voters, experts said. But if he succeeds in becoming the GOP nominee, he may have to zigzag back to his Massachusetts roots to appeal to independents and Democrats.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney calls for fresh U.S. strategy in war on terrorism

WASHINGTON – Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney called for “new course” in the fight against terrorists on Thursday and, in a swipe at Democrat John Edwards, said: “The war on terror is not a bumper sticker.”

Speaking to a conservative group, Romney argued that “there is a real war being waged by violent jihadists.”

Romney Reaches to the Christian Right

VIRGINIA BEACH, May 5 -- Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (R) did not discuss his Mormon faith as he continued his outreach Saturday to conservative Christians in a graduation speech at Regent University, the school founded by televangelist Pat Robertson.

Instead, Romney, who is intensely courting this key segment of the Republican base in hopes of winning the party's 2008 presidential nomination, expounded on conservative themes such as the importance of child-rearing and marriage and the presence of evil in the world.

Romney remark on cost of getting bin Laden stirs the bloggers

Mitt Romney generated a tempest in the blogosphere last week by suggesting in an interview that the United States shouldn't devote too many resources trying to capture Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. "It's not worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person," Romney told the Associated Press, adding that the United States should concentrate instead on fighting the broader problem of Islamic militancy.

Bloggers on both sides of the ideological spectrum, including some loyal to opposing candidates, seized on the former Massachusetts governor's remarks. "Perhaps Romney should watch the tape of the planes hitting the towers again," the writer Byron York wrote on National Review Online. A blogger on the left-leaning site Talking Points Memo wrote, "One wonders what the reaction would be if a Democrat said this."

Romney clarifies reports on hunting

BOSTON - Officials in the four states where Mitt Romney has lived say the Republican presidential contender, who calls himself a lifelong hunter, never took out a license. Romney says that is because he seldom has hunted where he needed one.

Questions about his hunting activities trailed Romney this past week after he remarked at a campaign stop that he has been a hunter nearly all his life. The next day, his campaign said Romney had gone hunting just twice — once as a teenager in Idaho and last year with GOP donors in Georgia.

Romney Lists Potential Running Mates

BLUFFTON, S.C. (March 29) - Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Thursday dropped some names of potential running mates in the 2008 race, but added such speculation is a bit premature.

Among those Romney mentioned for the second slot on the Republican ticket were three Southerners: South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush .

Liberals biggest hurdle for Romney?

Conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt thinks Mitt Romney's biggest opposition comes not from evangelical Christians who view Mormonism as a cult, but rather from secular liberals who remain skeptical of anyone who believes in revelation, divine intervention or miracles.

Writers in Slate and The New Republic, for example, called Romney's Mormon beliefs ludicrous and suggested that believing them disqualified him from office. That is bigotry, pure and simple, Hewitt says, and all people of faith should condemn it - or no one is safe.

On Friday evening, he spoke at a dinner for Miami-Dade Republicans, calling Cuban leaders Fidel Castro and his brother Raul, "Cuban monsters" and said he looked forward to seeing the day when "the stain of Castro is finally washed from the soil of Cuba."The former Massachusetts governor said he supports the U.S. embargo against that country.

Romney to speak at Falwell's university

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., March 3 (UPI) — Some students at the Virginia university founded by Pat Robertson say presidential candidate Mitt Romney is not Christian enough to speak there.

Robertson, a former presidential candidate himself as well as a broadcaster and evangelist, invited Romney, a Mormon, to address graduates at Regent University in May. He defended the decision in a memo to the faculty, The Virginia Pilot reported.

When I typed in Mitt Romney in the "News Search Engine" this was the fifth story that came up and it was the least biased of the five. The first four all used the word "Hate" in the headline to either describe Romney or his positions. I get the distinct feeling that the Mainstream Media has a real problem with Romney's religion.

I wondered when the first attack piece about Govenor Romney's religion would appear. Apparently it didnt take long for someone to figure out that if Govenor Romney's roots are Mormans then the odds were good that at least one of his ancestors had more than a single wife. This "Fact" has absolutely nothing to do with Govenor Romney or his ability to be a good President ---- all it does is present the Govenor in a bad light. I am curious what we would find if someone studyied the ancestors of all the "Major" Democrat candidates?

ABC News' Jonathan Greenberger Reports: Republican presidential candididate Mitt Romney offered a new explanation today for why he supported a Democrat in 1992.

That year, Romney, then a registered independent, voted for former Sen. Paul Tsongas in the 1992 Democratic presidential primary. He told ABC's George Stephanopoulos, in an interview that will air Sunday on "This Week," that his vote was meant as a tactical maneuver aimed at finding the weakest opponent for incumbent President George H.W. Bush.

Romney distancing himself from state health plan

He even suggests Demos will be to blame if it falters

BALTIMORE — With signs emerging that his signature health-care plan faces hurdles, former Gov. Mitt Romney has begun to distance himself from the new law and is suggesting that Democrats will be to blame if the plan falters.

Friday, after addressing a gathering of conservative lawmakers in Baltimore, Romney told reporters that he cannot be held responsible for decisions that Beacon Hill lawmakers make about the sweeping plan now that he is out of office.

"I hope they take action that makes it work even better than I could have thought of," said Romney, who is exploring a campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. "But if they take action that makes it unworkable, I'll point that out. I'm not going to sit on the sidelines and not have a comment to make."

At recent political appearances, Romney has subtly lowered expectations for the law he championed as governor. At the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire on Thursday, he warned that the Democrat-dominated Massachusetts Legislature may cause the collapse of a system he helped design.

In a speech to a retreat of conservative congressional Republicans, Romney lashed out at Clinton for telling a pro-Israel dinner that a dialogue with countries hostile to Israel - including Iran and Syria - is needed to promote peace in the Middle East.
