California's role in presidential politics

A look at how the state currently plays the game and efforts to change its status.

California's role in the 2008 presidential race has been highlighted in recent weeks. First, the state has seen a virtual parade of presidential hopefuls roam through, mostly seeking financial support.

Second, in an effort to see its role go beyond that of national "ATM," the legislature has pushed a plan for an early presidential primary. That effort is also linked to efforts to extend term limits and redraw state and national political districts.
