The eight Democrats who are seeking their party’s 2008 presidential nomination met Thursday night for the first in a series of debates leading up to the first primary and caucus voting next January. They did not exhibit much disagreement and often criticized the Bush administration’s handling of the Iraq war and also defended their strategies for combating terrorism.
But what was perhaps most notable about the debate, which was held at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, was that recent events provided plenty of grist for candidates to expound on topics that otherwise might not have been addressed.

Obama vows to 'turn the page' on Iraq
SAN DIEGO - Wooing influential California Democrats, presidential contender Barack Obama vowed to "turn the page on this Iraq disaster" while
Hillary Rodham Clinton denounced President Bush's conduct of the war as "one of the darkest blots on leadership we've ever had."
California, long a major cash source for candidates of both parties, is poised to become more influential in the electoral process as well, having moved its primary to next Feb. 5. As a result, the state Democratic weekend convention was expected to attract all the party's major presidential contenders except Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, who was campaigning in South Carolina.

Senator Has New Plan To Partition Iraq

(US News) Sen. Sam Brownback, a 2008 GOP presidential candidate, says that he hopes to move a bipartisan bill calling for the partitioning of Iraq into three states before the Democratic supplemental funding bill for the war goes to the president for his promised veto.
"I'd like to do it before we go to veto," he said in a roundtable interview with reporters. His plan: teaming with Sen. Joe Biden, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to push forward Biden's plan to move toward a political division of the war-torn nation. However, Brownback said that while he's been talking with Biden about the plan, the Delaware senator has not committed to it.

‘Top Tier’ Candidate? Maybe Not, but Dodd Is Still Enjoying the Ride
ORANGEBURG, S.C., April 27 — Senator Christopher J. Dodd has a magnificent handshake, maybe the best in the Democratic presidential field. He grips with a brisk clench, makes masterly eye contact and tops it off with a light pat on the wrist from his nonshaking hand. It is the grip of a pro, a (perish the thought) political pro, which he is, the silvery-haired son of a senator, accomplished lawmaker, backslapper and armsqueezer.
It is a typical morning in the Dodd campaign in that he is coming off a bit of a downer, Thursday night’s Democratic debate here. He earned some solid reviews but failed to draw much notice. Kucinich Files Impeachment Articles Vs. VP
(AP) Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich filed articles of impeachment Tuesday against Vice President Dick Cheney, saying his action is driven by a desire to defend Americans' right "to have a government that is honest and peaceful." The Ohio congressman said Cheney manipulated and fabricated intelligence on weapons of mass destruction to justify the Iraq war.
