Fred Thompson seized every opportunity

WASHINGTON - It is the kind of story you could write a book about: A 35-year-old single mother of three is fired from her state job after refusing to go along with a scheme to pardon criminals who bribe aides to the governor. The plot cries out for a good lawyer to save the day.

All the better if he has charm and a commanding presence. Enter Fred Thompson, 6-foot-5 inches of cigar-chomping Southern gentleman. He saves the day; the woman is vindicated.
And best of all, for a man with a presidential campaign in his future, it is a true story, and someone did write a book about it.

Many a life follows a serendipitous path. One person's influence sends someone's career in a new direction.

Fred Thompson at GOP leadership conference

Indianapolis - The city is playing host to the 2007 Midwest Republican Leadership Conference.Last night, we heard from candidates Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee.

Saturday night, it's former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson's turn at the podium.Thompson spent about 20 minutes in a press conference this afternoon.

He would not say when he plans to formally announce his bid for president.

Clinton Slams GOP Rival's Cuba Remark

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - Taking a swipe at a potential GOP presidential rival, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday criticized Fred Thompson for suggesting illegal Cuban immigrants pose a terrorist threat.

"I was appalled when one of the people running for or about to run for the Republican nomination talked about Cuban refugees as potential terrorists," Clinton told Hispanic elected officials. "Apparently he doesn't have a lot of experience in Florida or anywhere else, and doesn't know a lot of Cuban-Americans."

Thompson, who is polling strongly among GOP primary voters and is expected to join the race soon, made the comment at a campaign stop Wednesday in South Carolina.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If Republican Fred Thompson enters the presidential race next month as expected, the actor and former senator will be aiming to add another title to a crowded resume -- blogger-in-chief.

Thompson has been contributing frequently to conservative Web sites as he gears up for a 2008 presidential bid, posting thoughts on topics ranging from the French election to the Middle East and the immigration debate.

Fred Thompson edging toward 2008 bid

Fred Thompson says the country faces different challenges now than it did when he spurned overtures to run for president in 2000, leading him to consider a return to politics.

"I think that everybody was kind of sitting back, taking it easy and thinking that, you know, peace and prosperity were going to kind of last forever. I think we know better than that now," the former Tennessee senator told The Associated Press.

Just as the “Draft Fred” movement has entered another gear, it appears that Focus on the Family’s Dr. James Dobson (a Gingrich supporter) is trying to set it back. In a recent interview, Dobson opined that, although conservative, former Sen. Fred Thompson is not a Christian.

Is Fred Thompson about ready to lay down the Law and Order?

WASHINGTON - Fred Thompson's surprising third-place showing in the latest USA Today-Gallup Poll is certainly a reflection of rank-and-file Republicans' unease about the declared GOP candidates. But it also provides insight into the show-biz requirements of a successful modern candidate.

Thompson, who has oscillated between the political and entertainment culture for 35 years, personifies that cross-cultural appeal more than any Republican now in the field. Simply put, Americans like a little rock star in their presidential candidates. (See Barack Obama).

The question is whether a few polls and some Internet buzz is enough to entice a 64-year-old man with two children younger than 4 and a successful career on NBC's "Law and Order" series to jump into an 18-month meat grinder toward the presidency.

Possible Fred Thompson Candidacy Animates Conservatives

(US News) The possibility that former Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee might run for president has animated many conservative leaders who are unhappy with the GOP choices that exist now.

They consider Thompson a strong conservative with stellar communications skills and an interesting resume that includes success and fame as a movie and TV actor. All this reminds many of Ronald Reagan, an icon of the right.

"Fred says he might run and he would be a real threat for the Republican nomination," says a prominent conservative who is neutral in the presidential race so far. The problem: Is Thompson willing to devote the time and energy needed for a run?

'Law & Order' star Fred Thompson says he is considering 2008 presidential run

WASHINGTON:


Fred Thompson thinks there is not enough "star" power in the Republican presidential field, so the 'Law & Order' star and former Tennessee senator is considering getting into the 2008 race.


Thompson, who plays district attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's drama, said Sunday that he is going to "leave the door open" and make a decision in the coming months.

"I'm going to wait and see what happens," Thompson said. "I want to see my colleagues on the campaign trial, what they say, what they emphasize, whether they can carry the ball next November."
